Templemore Garda Training Centre Needs To Be Reopened “Urgently”

Labour Senator Denis Landy has written to Alan Shatter, Minister for Justice, calling on him to reopen the Garda Training Centre at Templemore as a matter of urgency.

Senator Landy was commenting in light of the discussions at the Oireachtas Justice Committee yesterday where Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan pointed out that there is at least a two year lead in time from the training stage of recruits to them being available to work on the streets. This situation is compounded by the fact that it is estimated that currently there are approximately 1,200 Gardaí who are eligible to retire based on age or length of service.

“The current Garda number is 13,742 and it is essential that this does not fall below 13,000 to ensure services are kept at current levels within the Gardai”. Senator Landy has included in his letter to Minister Shatter the facts as outlined by the Garda Commissioner and has asked Government to examine the immediate reopening of the Garda Training Centre and recruitment of new GardaÍ.
