O’Dowd Commends Tipperary Firefighters
“The rationale behind these awards remains as valid as for their launch in 1992: it is the State’s way of honouring local authority fire service personnel for ‘being there’ over all the years, for being prepared to respond to calls for help, at all times, and in all weathers.” Mr. Fergal O’Dowd T.D., Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, said when speaking at a ceremony to present awards to fire service personnel at the National Long Service Awards held today at the Red Cow Moran Hotel, Dublin.
Those honoured included firefighters from North and South Tipperary.
The awards were made for service of twenty and thirty years, almost 20 years to the day on which the inauguration of the Awards took place in November 1992.
The Minister went on to say “Your work as fire services personnel highlights personal qualities of courage, strength and empathy when giving assistance to people caught up in emergency incidents.”
The Minister commended the fire service for coping with an ever more diverse and complex range of challenges and referred to the role of continuous training in helping firefighters carry out tasks safely. “The training which fire service personnel undergo, is key to your ability to meet these ever-changing challenges” the Minister said.
