Modern Postal Service “At Heart Of Rural Ireland”
Motor tax payments, driving license applications, rail ticket purchases and increased banking facilities could all soon be available at your local post office, according to Fine Gael T.D. and Chairman of the Transport and Communications Committee Tom Hayes. At last week’s Committee meeting Deputy Hayes established a working group on the future of the Irish postal network.
“I am firmly of the belief that the Post Office can and should be at the heart of rural communities, right across the country. That is why I have begun working on a report to be presented to the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources that will set out how best to modernise the Irish postal service to ensure its success into the future,” said Deputy Hayes.
He has already started inviting stakeholders to appear before the Committee to hear their views on the future of the service. The committee has already heard from both An Post and the Irish Postmasters Union.
Speaking after the Committee meeting, Deputy Hayes outlined where he believed the future was heading: “The Post Office needs to become more relevant to modern day Ireland. Rural parts of this country often lack so many of the services available to those in more urban areas. That is why I am determined to use the Post Office network to deliver those services in a sustainable and profitable manner.”
Over the coming months Deputy Hayes said he hopes to hear more from those on the frontlines of Ireland’s postal service, as well as rural community groups who feel the post office can do more to support their needs.
“Our work now begins on putting together a report for the Minister on how this expansion should take place in a sustainable and achievable manner,” he added.
