Gaile National School

Looking from the school playground over the green pastures of Glenbane towards the distant hills of Turraheen, the pupils of Gaile N.S. watched and wondered what the new structures appearing on the horizon could be.

Closer inspection would be needed to ascertain the status of these fresh additions to our Western skyline. Friend or foe? How would we know?

There was only one way to find out. And so, on a dry, crisp February morning, a school expedition to Turraheen was launched, its purpose being to track down and view closely these imposing arrivals on our everyday eye line. Twenty minutes drive and two fantastic fresh air filled hours of walking later, we had our answers, summed up by our senior pupils in the following few lines of poetry, which we hope you will enjoy.

On a hill in Turraheen

Some structures of great might we’ve seen

With massive stems above the trees

And blades that slice the morning breeze

Turning wind to electric power

Minute by minute, hour by hour

Round and round and round they go

Working in hail, rain or snow

Off in far and distant hills

Like gigantic daffodils
