Fr. Mackey Blessed Well Project, Castleiney

A committee was set up last year to completely restore the Fr. Mackey Blessed Well in Castleiney which has fallen into disrepair in recent years. Following several meetings and fund raising activities by the committee since that time, it is hoped to get work started on the project soon.

At a meeting on Monday last, Sept. 3rd, agreement was reached with local farmers whose land surrounds the well area, to allow for drainage works to be carried out that would relieve flooding in the area of the well. This will be enormous help to the project.

Over the years items have been left at the well by visitors. These items have now deteriorated and look shabby. The committee are asking any persons who wish to collect any personal items left at the well, to do so as soon as possible as the whole area is due to be cleaned up to make way for the new project.

Other items were discussed at the meeting such as Planning and the Heritage status of the well.

There are lots more information on the project on the Loughmore Castleiney website: www.loughmorecastleieny.com. Just click on the HISTORY link and select same.

At the beginning of the meeting a message of sympathy was passed by the Chariman, on behalf of the Committee, to Fr. P. Corbett p.p. Loughmore Castleiney, whose brother Seamus died recently.
