CASHEL will lose its “soul” if German retail giant Aldi moves into a prime area of Georgian land located in the heart of the town, a delegation of businessmen and conservationists told Cashel Town Council on Monday.

Aldi’s plans to build a discount store to rival Lidl on the Cahir road, has attracted some 22 observations and submissions from concerned members of the public. Businessman Tommy Grogan said he wasn’t against competition, but an Aldi store at Indaville on Boherclough street will “decimate the town centre.”

Mr Grogan – who runs a convenience store in the Lower Gate – said the business people of the town are duty-bound to protect Cashel for future generations.

“I’ve been involved in business since 1976. It’s my belief from recent experience and trends, that over the last five years, Cashel has been decimated from planning decisions, and the downturn in the economy.”
