Award For Young Boher Musician - Congratulations to Blaithin Kennedy, daughter of Mairéad and John, Ballintinoe, Boher, who was presented with the Carling Trophy by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann County and branch chairperson, Pat Loughman recently. This award acknowledges Blaithin’s outstanding performance at the 2012 Munster Fleadh Cheoil in Dungarvan last July where she was deemed the best individual champion. Blaithin is a member of the Nenagh Ormond C.C.E. and attends Boher Primary School. Well-done Blaithin!

Open Water Swim - The i3 Open Water Swim will take place from UL Activity at the Two-Mile-Gate on Saturday/Sunday September 29th and 30th. If you wish to take part in any event you must register online (with the exception of Little Fish event) on the i3 Open Water Swim 2012 website. To facilitate this event the Carpark in Ballina (at Swimming Pool) will be closed to vehicular traffic from Saturday, Sept 29th to 8pm on Sunday, Sept 30th; Ballina Slipway will be closed from 9am to 6pm on Sunday, September 30th. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Exhibitions At Quay Arts - “Opposites Attract”, an exhibition of contrasting styles by artists Helene Moran and Beate Gillson continues at Quay Arts until this Friday. Camogie - Ballina U/14’s bowed out of the County League following a narrow defeat to Holycross on Sunday last at the semi-final stage. Leading by one point at half time, the girls battled on before conceding two goals in injury time to lose out on a score of 2-3 to 4-1. Ballina scorers on the day were Rebecca Foley 1-1, Sophie McGrattan 1-0, Anna Conway 0-1 and Jessica Ryan 0-1. On Saturday our U/10’s held their annual blitz. Ballina had two teams participating along with Sixmilebridge, Silvermines, Smith O’Brien’s and Cappamore. After tremendous days hurling the Ballina blue team came out on top in a hard fought final against Silvermines.
Three Peak Challenge - A unique three-peak challenge will take place in the picturesque surrounds of the Killaloe and Ballina on October 13th and 14th. Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport Alan Kelly officially launched the Boru3Peaks annual charity event, which will feature two day-time and one night-time hill walking and hill running events in the surrounding peaks of Tountinna, Moylussa and Keeper Hill. Boru3Peaks features individual or team events. You can enter one, two or all three events. Starting venues/times for three peaks are as follows Moylussa (532m), Two-Mile-Gate Car park at 10am on Saturday (Oct 13th): Tountinna (457m), base of Tountinna, 7pm on Saturday (13th): Keeper Hill (694m), Doonagh Carpark, 11am on Sunday (14th). Active TRavel Town Status - The twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe have being awarded ‘active travel town’ status by Minister Alan Kelly. This means that the towns are now part of national assessments for Smarter Travel planning and have received funding in this round of €275,000, which will go towards a comprehensive list of works in both towns with particular emphasis on footpaths, pedestrian crossings, cycle ways, access points to schools, bridge work and signage. Work will be completed by December of this year.
Ballin Juvenile G.A.A. - The U/12’s took part in Newport’s U/12 football tournament starting off with a tough game against Ballinahinch and then a cliff hanger against Newport resulting in our boys winning both and taking home the Cup. Congratulations to Ballina’s U/10 camogie ‘blue’ team, two-in-a-row winners of the annual U/10 Camogie Blitz. They had one fantastic victory over Cappamore, but lost out to Silvermines and then to Sixmilebridge in the B final.
Ballina U/16’s whose hurlers hurled a fine Burgess side to become champions of North Tipperary in the U/16 ‘B’ hurling championship in Nenagh on Saturday afternoon. This was as fine a game of hurling as one could wish to see in any grade and had bravery, skill, drama, extra time and lots and lots of scores. The U/16’s are out again next Saturday in County Semi-final V Killenaule.
Ballin Intermediate Success - The weekend was then topped off by the Intermediates winning the County Quarter-final against a very tough Clonakenny side. Ballina put on an excellent display of hurling in the 2nd half, and the game ended in a draw, 1-12 to 0-15 for Clonakenny. In extra time Ballina looked the fitter team and managed to score 3 goals and eventually went on to win by eight points.
