Lar Corbett was one of the last Tipperary players to leave the plush Croke Park dressingrooms on Sunday after he had received medical attention for a bruised shoulder sustained in a bone-crunching tackle in the latter stages of the game.
Unable to accept congratulatory handshakes with his right hand due to the discomfort of the shoulder complaint the genial Thurlesman wasn't exactly complaining! He was more than happy to extend his left hand! With a typical impish grin he said that the feeling after scoring the winning point had helped to take a lot of the soreness away!
Lar conveyed the good news that no serious damage was inflicted to the shoulder and with the help of further attention from the expert medical contingent behind the team he expected to be right in a few days.
Corbett who scored three points from play, and will be remembered best for his 71st minute beauty that steered Tipp into the semi-final, was modesty personified in the aftermath of an energy-sapping epic. Pointing to the dressing room he said- "Look, we have come out of that room delighted as a team, and every player can be very proud of their performance here today. This victory isn't about me scoring the winning point, I happened to be lucky enough to be in the right position at the right time, I decided to have a go, and it worked for me. Some days these split second chances can come right, more days they dont. I feel the credit should go to Pa Bourke. He came in there in the cracking last few minutes and really got stuck into the game. He made a great run through before setting up the chance for me. If he hadn't done that, and the players out the field hadn't been working their hearts out things might have been different."
Lar said that there was "a wonderful feeling" in the winners camp, but, everybody was very conscious that it was "just another step in the championship." He said- "We have played many a great match here (in Croke Park) sure you need only look at last year's All-Ireland, but, we came out very disappointed on the wrong end of the scoreline. So, we are pleased today. We have a lot to prove after Cork (defeat in Pairc Uo Chaoimh) and we are glad the way things went for us as a team today. We were nearly gone (in last few minutes) and the lads showed great character in fighting back and pulling off a win. But, it was a tight game, Galway are a fine side, and almost caught us. We are not getting carried away. We are in fierce tough championship, we now have to prepare for Waterford, and all we can hope is that this hard game will stand to us."
More than any other feature of their peformance Lar was delighted with the team spirit, the kind of mettle the side showed in last year's All-Ireland against Kilkenny. Tipp may have had their worrying barren spells- they failed to score for fifteen minutes in the first half, and in a nine minute spell in the second period- but their commitment was never in question.
